Clay impression kits are one of the most popular baby keepsakes. They’re also one of the most frustrating. Here’s how to get it right.
Before You Start
- Read the instructions completely. Different clays have different working times.
- Have everything ready before involving the baby.
- Roll the clay to even thickness (about 1.5cm) on a flat, clean surface.
- Wait until baby is sleepy or just fed.
The Technique
- Support baby’s leg with one hand.
- Press the foot firmly and evenly into the clay. Don’t wiggle.
- Press toes individually if they didn’t make a clear impression.
- Lift straight up — no twisting.
If It Goes Wrong
This is the good news: most air-dry clays can be re-rolled and tried again if the impression isn’t good. Don’t panic. Smooth it out and go again. Most kits have enough clay for 2–3 attempts.
Finishing
Let the clay dry completely (24–48 hours). Sand any rough edges gently. Paint if desired. Seal with varnish to prevent crumbling over time.
