3D casts capture every wrinkle, crease, and tiny fingernail in stunning detail. They’re one of the most impressive baby keepsakes you can create.

DIY vs Professional

DIY kits (£15–£40): Alginate moulding powder and plaster. Good results with practice. Expect 2–3 attempts.

Professional service (£80–£250): An expert takes the mould and produces a flawless cast, often painted in silver, gold, or bronze.

DIY Process

  1. Mix alginate with water to a smooth paste. Pour into a container.
  2. Gently submerge baby’s hand or foot. Hold still for 30–60 seconds until set.
  3. Carefully remove the hand, leaving a perfect mould.
  4. Mix plaster and pour into the mould. Tap to remove bubbles.
  5. Once set (several hours), peel away the alginate to reveal the cast.

Best Age

Newborn to 6 months is ideal — small enough to be adorable, sleepy enough to cooperate. After 6 months, they start grabbing the alginate and it becomes a wrestling match.

Display Ideas

Mount on a base, display in a shadow box, or place on a shelf alongside a photo from the same age. A matching hand and foot pair is particularly impressive.
