A stepping stone with a child’s handprint is a permanent outdoor keepsake that gets better with age. Here’s how to make one.

What You Need

  • A stepping stone mould (or use a foil baking tray).
  • Quick-setting cement or concrete mix.
  • Stones, marbles, or glass beads for decoration.
  • A stick for writing name and date.

How to Make It

  1. Mix cement according to instructions and pour into the mould.
  2. Wait 15–20 minutes until the surface is firm but still impressible.
  3. Press the child’s hand firmly into the surface. Hold for 10 seconds.
  4. Write name and date with a stick.
  5. Add decorative stones around the edges.
  6. Leave to cure for 48 hours before removing from the mould.

Making It an Annual Tradition

Create one each year. Line them as a garden path. Watching the handprints grow from tiny toddler to teenage is a stunning visual record of childhood.
